The next 18th Biennale of Sydney, from 27 June – 16 September 2012, is Australia's largest and most exciting contemporary visual arts event. Every two years the Biennale stages a three-month exhibition, plus a program of artist talks, performances, forums, film screenings, family events, guided tours and other special events across mutiple Sydney venues, all free to the public. The third oldest biennale in the world, the Biennale of Sydney continues to be recognised for showcasing the freshest and most provocative contemporary art from Australia and around the world.

Collider was engaged by the Biennale to visualise the complete campaign for 2012. Over the next year we will be working closely with both the Biennale and its appointed Artistic Directors to conceive and guide the visual branding of the event in multiple capacities.

As we progress, and different design elements are released to the public, we will continue to document our outcomes through this project page.

Stage 1 — Launch Packs: 54th Venice Biennale Tabloid Paper, Linen Bags, t-shirts.

The 18th Biennale is described in a record of visitation and encounter represented by lines that intersect in exploratory journeys. The typography emerges as these lines encounter previously invisible typographic obstacles as shapes to be explored on their path. The newspaper can be pulled apart into new compositions and tiled to form a larger connected linear illustration. Line work also connects in a linear fashion across pages. Like the typography, the line work is formed by individual journeys around graphic forms. The lines are created either through real GPS tracked movements or through generative programming that emulates the process of people walking and encountering spaces. The lines are not hand-drawn, we avoided this aspect of their making so as to remove ourselves from imposing our own particular creative judgement on the making of each line image.
