Koala
Tested On Animals

Working with Collider director Dylan Duclos, Studio was tasked with the concepting and creation of a hypothetical facility whereby Koala conducts experiments on ‘animals’, that is, people with very strong characteristics of animals.

We created a humorously clinical and minimalist facility to extend the world of the stories in the three commercials. Featuring exacting architectural features, sterile observation rooms and ominous security glass, we tried to depict a serious and intimidating place to support the absurd stories.

All the facility spaces beyond the room featuring actors were created as CG sequences. To help the spaces feel alive and believable we created subtle moments where the viewer gets glimpses into the inner workings of the place such as figures behind frosted glass, a warning light, doors ajar or an equipment trolley waiting to be used.

Typography, specifically in the form of highly stringent and intentionally pedantic wayfinding and identification systems, played an important role in providing the scientific atmosphere of the place. This sensibility also found its way into specific props and details such as books, clipboards (featuring corporate test protocols) and even facility maps.
